KB1046 - Using a Transcript-capable Player on Kaltura Videos in Moodle

If your viewers need to view, download, or print a transcript for one of your videos, you can select a Transcript-capable player to display your Kaltura videos. The default Kaltura player shows captions but it does not show transcripts. if you select the Transcript-capable video player, VCC's Kaltura media platform can display your video's captions in a block of transcript text with related controls, below the video.

Applying the Transcript-capable Player to your uploaded videos

There are a few ways to use the Transcript-capable Player for your Kaltura media:

1. Using the "Embed Kaltura Media" toolbar button

You can embed your Kaltura media into any Moodle resource or activity using the "Kaltura Media Embed" toolbar button in Moodle's editor.

Click the Embed Settings button to select the "Transcript-capable Player" for this video embed:
The Embed Settings button in Kaltura's Embed window.

2. Using "Share" Embed Options in "My Media"

Select the "Transcript-capable Player" when getting Embed code from the Share tab in your My Media area.
(Click on the media, click the "Share" tab, and under Embed, you'll see radio buttons for which player skin to select.)

3. Manually Editing an Existing Embed Code

In existing Kaltura video embeds in your Moodle course or web page, you can edit the HTML embed code to use the Player ID for the transcript-capable player. Using the HTML view in Moodle's editor, you can see your video's HTML embed code.

Look for this text:

playerSkin/23449558/

That 8 digit number specifies which Kaltura player will load the video for onscreen viewing. (That number is the default player used for your current context and device.)

To change the player to the transcript-capable one, just replace that 8 digit number with the number 23449901 (keeping that trailing slash at the end), like so:

playerSkin/23449901/

After you save it in Moodle, your embedded video player should show the transcript controls below the video.

4. Embedding from the Media's "Share" tab

You can share an existing media to your page using media's "Share tab and the "Embed" code, and then paste that code into a Label resource in your Moodle course or web page.
[ NOTE: The "Hide Transcript" and "Show Transcript" links may not appear in the Transcript bar when the Player is added using Share >> Embed code. ]
