KB1312 - Using VCC Mediaspace

VCC Mediaspace is part of VCC's video repository, providing video content to the general public via open-web galleries, and to VCC students and employees through private, password-protected channels and groups. (VCC uses the Kaltura media hosting platform. If you want to know about using Kaltura inside VCC's Moodle LMS, start with article KB1197 - About Kaltura video hosting at VCC)

Galleries and Channels

Mediaspace has two types of containers for organizing media: Galleries and Channels.
Galleries can be open to the public web without requiring a VCC login.
They provide public access to supportive tutorials for VCC students, and video recordings of recent events and workshops for VCC faculty and staff. Galleries are located across the top of the screen in a series of drop-down menus. Each gallery contains individual video or audio media files. Different groups or VCC departments may manage content in their own galleries.

Mediaspace Channels provide password-secured, private access to video content. Mediaspace Channels require a VCC login to access, and may contain educational content, or internal information or administrative resources used by VCC programs.

If you do not want your Mediaspace content to be public or indexed by Google, it's best to publish it to a Channel instead of a Gallery. That will require the viewer to use a VCC login to access it, which will prevent Google from crawling the video's Mediaspace listing.

Searching VCC Mediaspace

The "Search" icon at the top of any Mediaspace page lets you enter keywords to search for videos in Kaltura. Videos will match if your keywords are found in a video's title, description, closed captions, or tags.

This video from Kaltura provides a detailed description of the search capabilities available in Mediaspace (referred to as "KMS" by Kaltura):

Exploring Mediaspace by URLs

Because Galleries in Mediaspace are publicly visible on the web and can be accessed without a VCC login, Google has already indexed many of VCC's gallery pages of content descriptions.

To see this, do a Google search for this string (with the quotes):

This will return all the instances of tags that Google has found in the VCC Mediaspace site.
If you're looking for a topic to explore in Mediaspace, that may be one way to search.

You can also browse Kaltura Mediaspace content by tags, using URLs like these:

https://mediaspace.vcc.ca/tag?tagid=culinary
https://mediaspace.vcc.ca/tag?tagid=office365
https://mediaspace.vcc.ca/tag?tagid=moodle
