A course format refers to the layout of a course. The course format can be selected in Administration > Course administration > Edit settings

Moodle Course Formats: Options and Settings

Which Course Format should I use?

There's no one perfect answer to that question. The prime goal of an online course's design should be to benefit the student's learning, but often, a course's design can be influenced by additional requirements like usability, accessibility, language, audience expectations, and professional, industrial, or cultural conventions.

The most common course formats for eLearning courses at VCC are:

  • variations on the Topics format (e.g. "Topics" or "Collapsed Topics", which allow collapsible or hidden sections).
  • the OneTopic format, which uses a tabbed interface to organize topics and sub-topics into hierarchies.

New course formats are periodically evaluated by eLSupport, either at the request of faculty, or to improve ease-of-use, navigation, or accessibility.
Contact eLSupport if you have questions about which course format may be best for your needs.
