KB1130 - Helping with Moodle System Cleanup

Help Keep Your Moodle Clean!

Our Moodle server space is not infinite, and occasionally we receive system warnings when it's nearing capacity.  When this happens, we have to quickly delete courses or files to free up space.  We find courses that contain very large files -- usually video, audio or PowerPointtm files -- and we contact the owner of the course to discuss what we can do with these files to clean them up.  We also search for old courses that haven't had recent activity and delete those.

These reactive measures can be stressful for us and the faculty involved. So, what can we do to be PROactive?

We ask that you assist us by using these methods:

  1. DO NOT upload your videos directly into Moodle using "Add File".
Instead, use VCC Kaltura, or link out to YouTube or Vimeo.
  2. Delete your old course backups (KB1081)
  3. Delete your User Private Backup files (KB1131)
  4. Clean out your Private Files (KB1132)
  5. Archive old courses that you might need again (KB1096) and then contacting eLearning Support to delete the original course from Moodle*
  6. Clean out Legacy Files (KB1133)

* Before contacting eLearning Support with your request to have a course deleted, please FIRST find your Moodle course ID and include it in your request to ensure that the correct course is deleted.  Read KB1115 to find out more about your Moodle Course ID.
