KB1116 - Using the Sharing Cart to copy course content

Using the Sharing Cart block, you can easily copy resources and activities from one Moodle course to another.

The Sharing Cart block must be added to both the originating course (i.e. "Course A") and the receiving course ("Course B"). It must also not be in the hidden state. If it is, you will not see the copy option on your edit menu.

Copying Items from Course to Course

Follow these steps to use the Sharing Cart block to copy a resource or activity from Course A to Course B:

Inside Course A,

  1. Be sure your editing is turned on.
  2. From the Add a Block block, choose Sharing Cart.  Tip: if you don't see it on the list, that's a sign that it's already been added to the course.
  3. Next to the item you want to copy, click on the Copy to Sharing Cart icon (a little "basket").
  4. Check the Sharing Cart to ensure your activity or resource has been copied.

Inside Course B,

  1. Be sure your editing is turned on.
  2. From the Add a Block block, choose Sharing Cart.  Tip: if you don't see it on the list, that's a sign that it's already been added to the course.
  3. Find the activity or resource you copied from Course A, on the list of items in your Sharing Cart block (refresh the page if you need to)
  4. Click on the Copy to Course icon beside the item you want to copy to Course B.
  5. Locate the destination topic where you wish to copy the item and click on the Copy Here icon located at the bottom of that topic.

  6. Check to ensure your item was copied. Tip: the item remains in your Sharing Cart, so you can easily make multiple copies.

Copying Sections from Course to Course

You will also see an option to copy an entire section into the Sharing Cart, via a little "basket" icon located in the Section's Title bar.
Copied sections are organized as sub-folders in the Sharing Cart block. They can be copied into other courses to overwrite an existing section, or to fill in the contents into an empty section.

Other Features

  • Items remain in your Sharing Cart until you delete them.
  • You will also see your Sharing Cart items in your "User Private Backup Area" in the course "Restore" page (named "block_sharing_cart-[...]")
  • You can also create folders inside your Sharing Cart, to organize your Sharing Cart items. (Those folders are only used inside the Cart, and cannot be restored back into your course.)
