KB1289 - Using Moodle's File Picker

Tags moodle files

Moodle's File Picker allows you to upload, manage, or select files to be used in your Moodle course.
For example, an editing Teacher can add a file to an activity or resource, or a forum participant can attach a file to a forum post.

One of the most significant aspects of the File Picker is that you can create links to files you've already used in the course without needing to upload the same file a second time. This saves storage space in your course, and makes it possible to provide links to existing course materials even if you no longer have a copy of the original file to re-upload.

This excellent video from Moodle's Mary Cooch gives a good overview of how the File Picker can be used in Moodle:

Read the File Picker page from Moodle HQ to see much more detail about how to use this feature.

In Moodle's Editor, the "Embedded Files" toolbar icon allows you to add, remove, or download files which can be used in any resource or activity in your course. By uploading files into your course this way, you're using Moodle's File Manager to store a file once that you can create links to again and again, without needing to re-upload the file each time you want your Students to see it.
