The issue
Instructors frequently mistakenly set up set up with the When time expires set to something other than Open attempts are submitted automatically and this can lead to situations where the student is unable to submit their quiz for grading, even though the instructor wants to allow it.
The work around
The basic steps that need to happen are here, with more details below:
- Change the Quiz Settings
- Have the student** OR someone with "Login as..." ability (Manager role and Moodle Administrators) re-attempt (only to submit)
- Confirm student's completion and remove first attempt (optional)
- Change the Quiz Settings back (Optional, but recommended)
It is recommended that Step 2 be completed by a Manager or Administrator. However, steps 1, 3 , and 4 can be done by the instructor.
Step 1: Change the Quiz Settings
On the Quiz settings page,
- Under the Grade section, change Attempts Allowed to 2.
- Make sure that the Grading method is set to Highest grade, or Last attempt.
- Under the Question behaviour section, change the setting, Each attempt builds on the last to Yes.
- Under the Extra restrictions on attempts section, enter a secure password in the Require password field.
- Save your changes.
Step 2: Re-attempt and Submit
In this step, someone — either the student** OR someone with "Log in as..." capability (Manager role and Moodle Administrators) — must re-attempt the quiz, but only for the purpose of submitting it. Because of the option chosen in Step 1.3, all of the answers from the student's previous attempt will be copied to this new attempt.
If the student will be doing this, then provide the student with instructions to re-attempt the quiz using the password you have provided, but to simply go in without changing any answers and then clicking on the Submit button at the end. There are some risks here**, so be sure to read about them, below.
If someone in a Manager role, or a Moodle Administrator (recommended, instead of the student, for the reasons** listed at the bottom of this article) will be doing this, then here are the steps to follow:
- Locate a link to the student's profile. For example you can find it on the class participants list or the grader report.
- From the students proifile page, under the Administration section, click on Log in as.
- Navigate to the Quiz page and click on Re-attempt quiz.
- Enter the password set in Step 1.4.
- Without changing any answers, finish the quiz and Submit it.
- Log out from the student's account.
Step 3: Confirm Completion
- Go to the quiz page
- Click on View all Attempts
- Find the student and confirm that his or her second submission is there. It will probably appear on the last row.
- If the submission is still missing, something has gone wrong and the steps should be followed again.
- If the submission is there, as expected, the students first attempt can be deleted. (click on check box and chose "With selected..." "Delete attempts."
Step 4: Restore Quiz Settings
This is an optional step, but is best to do if you plan to use or copy this course shell for a future group of students.
On the Quiz settings page,
- Under the Grade section, change Attempts Allowed to 1. There is no need to change the other multi-attempt settings from 1.2 and 1.3.
- Under the Extra restrictions on attempts section, remove the password from the Require password field.
- Save your changes.
** Note that if you are asking the Student to re-attempt this, there are risks that the student will do one or more of the following, so care must be taken to avoid this.
- change answers
- complete questions not previously completed
- give the password to other students who may try to re-attempt the quiz
