KB1299 - Stop hiding your Moodle Quizzes!

My students can't see their grades from their quiz/exam.

This is an issue that comes up over and over again. Most often, the Instructor has hidden the quiz after it was taken because they don't want students to access it after taking it. But that's not how this should be handled: when an activity is hidden from students, it also becomes hidden in the Gradebook. Stop hiding your Moodle Quizzes!

In the following examples, Quiz #1 has already been completed, so the instructor has hidden it. Quiz #2 is coming up in the near future, so the instructor has made it visible.

The Wrong Way

Example showing Instructor's view of Quiz 1 hidden on the course content page ("Hidden from students" marker indicates hidden):

Example showing Instructor's view of Quiz 1 hidden on the Grader report page (Here, almost nothing indicates visibility):

Example showing Instructor's view of Quiz 1 hidden on the User report page (Again, almost nothing indicates visibility):

Example showing Student's view of only Quiz 2 (because Quiz 1 is hidden) on the User report page:

The Right Way

Each quiz has "Timing" settings that control when it is accessible to students. If a quiz is closed, then a student can only access the introductory page of the quiz, but not the quiz questions themselves:

So, stop hiding your students' quizzes and exams.
Use the Timing settings instead, and you'll save yourself a lot of questions from your students.
