KB1064 - How can I view what the students are seeing in my course?

To view what the students are seeing in your course, you temporarily switch your Moodle user role to "Student".

  1. From the main page of the course, open your User Menu (in the top-right, under your profile photo) and click on “Switch role to...”
  2. On the next screen that appears, choose "Student"
  3. You'll now see "Student" appear under your name and photo in your User Menu.
  4. Navigate your course to see how things look and act as a Student.
  5. When you're finished, you can return to your normal role by selecting "Return to my normal role " in your User Menu.

NOTE: When viewing things under an assumed role, some things may not appear *exactly* as they would if you were logged in as an actual student. This is because Moodle doesn't know who you are.  If your course uses groups and groupings, then Moodle won't know which group you belong to.  Also, if you complete quizzes or assignments, your grade will not be recorded, as it cannot be associated to an actual student.

Other ways to see your course as a Student would:

  • If you have your own VCC student account, you could login as that account and enroll in your own course. Your student account login name would be your employee/student ID, and the password would be your birthdate in the form MMDDYY.
  • You can use the DemoStudent Block to test your course as a pretend Student:
