KB1205 - Known Issue: Web browser blocking Kaltura session cookies

If you receive an error message when trying to access Kaltura ("My Media", for example), try the following fix:

The error message will say "It seems your browser is blocking 3rd party session cookies which are required for the Kaltura application. To resolve this issue, please update your settings to allow 3rd party cookies."

This is a web browser settings issue. In essence, your browser is not allowing Kaltura to store some session information in browser cookie(s). This storage is harmless but necessary for Kaltura to keep your user session alive while you're using various Kaltura functions in your browser.

You can allow the Kaltura cookies easily in order to remove this error message from your browser.

This issue was reported under Apple iOS, using the Safari browser, but this issue could affect users using other browsers, such as Firefox or Chrome.

For IOS, older than version 6:

  1. From your home screen, open the Settings icon.
  2. Select "Safari", and select Block Cookies.
  3. Select "Always Allow".
  4. Go back into the Safari browser and refresh the page.

You should now see the Kaltura page open as expected, and it should work from now on, unless someone/something changes those Safari settings back to the default.

For iOS, version 6 or newer:

  1. From your home screen, open the Settings icon.
  2. Select "Safari" and make sure that "Block All Cookies" is turned off, and that "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" is turned off.
  3. Go back into the Safari browser and refresh the page.

For other browsers... (Firefox, Chrome, etc.)

Check the browser's "Settings" page and try these options:

  • Turn off the option to block third-party cookies, then refresh the page and see if it works
  • Turn off the "Tracking Protection" option, then refresh the page and see if it works
