KB1036 - Closing an Existing Course and Downloading a Copy

After performing the following steps, Moodle users will no longer have access to your online course. However, a backup will be stored on a local drive that you select, and your original course will be ready for new enrollments. Course backups can be restored later if required (i.e., student grade appeals, course development, etc.).

Remove student access to the course

  1. From your course front page, select "Settings".
  2. In the Edit Settings page, under Course Visibility, select "Hide".
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Save changes".

Backup your course

  1. From your course front page, select "More" and "Course Reuse"
  2. From the page that appears, select "Backup".
  3. On the Backup settings page, Moodle will preselect default settings for the features you'll need.
  4. At the bottom of the page, select "Jump to Final Step"
  5. Your course backup will begin (you will see a progress bar as your Backup is being created)

You can watch a video of the steps for backing up a Moodle course in eLSupport article KB1271

Download a copy of the course backup file

  1. Once the backup is complete, you will be presented with the "Restore" page, where your backup is listed on-screen.
  2. Select Download to download the backup you just created (Backup files are named and date-stamped to help you identify them)
WARNING: Any download should be kept is a secure location that is password protected for privacy reasons.
  3. Your backup files can also be accessed under "Restore", under the Action menu
