KB1076 - Why is my Student's Correct Quiz Answer Marked "Incorrect?"

Tags moodle quiz

If a student is receiving an "incorrect" mark for what appears to be a correct answer to a Short Answer question in a quiz, check for a period at the end of the student's response.

It's common for a student to enter a period at the end of a short answer question.  If this hasn't been included in one of the possible correct answers, then that one character can result in an incorrect mark.

Rather than trying to teach your students not to enter a period, it's better to assume that someone will and be proactive about it.

Use one of the following to solutions:

  1. Include one possible answer with and one without a period. That way, they'll be marked correct, regardless, if all else is correct.
  2. Add an asterisk (*) to the end of the answer, so that any additional characters appended to the end of an answer will be ignored.  The advantage of doing it this way, is you can stick to having only one correct answer, instead of the two you would need for method #1.
