KB1351 - Using the Interpreter/DS Advisor role in Moodle

Since Interpreters and Disability Services Advisors require many of the same Moodle capabilities, these are combined under one role: Interpreter/DS Advisor.

This role is a site level role, not a a course-level one. Because of this, the users do not need to be added to each course on an individual basis.

Also because of the site-level access, users have access to every course shell in Moodle, including hidden courses, with the read-only capabilities that they've been assigned through this role. Because of this, requests to be added to this role must be sent to eLearning Support by users' Department Leaders.

Once added to the role, users do NOT need to be added to a course participants list. Because they are not an enrolled participant, the courses do not appear on their My courses page. They must access the courses through other means such as direct links, category searches, or course searches (such as using CRN). Note: A direct link (URL) provided by the instructor is the best method.

If the instructor has provided a CRN, but you find that CRN is an "enrolment only" shell, ask the instructor to provide you with a direct link (URL) to the course content shell. One clue that you're looking at an enrolment only shell is that has no course content and instead contains the standard default template. You will see this, somewhere near the top of the page:

In summary:

  • The combined Interpreter/DS Advisor role is a site-level role.
  • The assignment of a new user must be sent to eLearning Support by their Department Leader.
  • Assigned users have read-only access to all Moodle shells.
  • Assigned user do not appear on the Participants list.
  • Courses do not appear on the assigned users' My courses pages.
  • The best way to access the course shell (with content) is by getting a direct link (URL) from the instructor.

Note: As of Oct 10, 2025, DS Advisors should also be added to the Overrider role so that they can set Quiz overrides on behalf of instructors.
