Thank you for your inquiry and we appreciate the feedback. Screen timeout and lock settings provide two main benefits to VCC. First, the screen timeout reduces power consumption across the campus. Since we have more than 2000 computers in production, this makes a noticeable difference in our energy consumption. The second benefit is security. The locked screen prevents others from accessing your data, or the private data of students, and having unfettered, authenticated access to VCC internal network if you leave your computer for an extended period of time.
We appreciate this can seem like an inconvenience, but the policy has been considered carefully and the benefits outweigh the inconveniences. Since this is a college-wide policy, we are unable to disable it on individual computers at this time.
