KB1020 - Using the Question Bank

Body

The Moodle Question bank allows a teacher to create, preview, and edit questions in a database of questions and question categories.
Categories can be limited to being used on the site, course or quiz level.

Using the Question Bank

The Instructor enters the question bank by creating or editing a quiz activity and accessing "Question Bank" from the "More" menu.

Moodle Question Contexts: The Question Bank, Categories, and Courses

  • In Moodle, Questions are stored in Categories (like folders) inside the Question Bank.
  • Each Moodle Course (shell) has its own Category, where newly-created Questions get stored by default (unless the question creator decides to store them in a different category in the Bank). Each Quiz activity also has its own Category in the Bank.
  • A Teacher can create Question Bank categories to organize the questions being used in their Moodle course.
  • Questions are presented in a course using a Quiz activity. Quizzes are collections of references to Questions, that can be presented to Students on one or more pages, with various attributes (time limit, number of attempts, etc.). Quizzes allow you to present and display Questions to your Students inside your Course.

When building a new quiz in Moodle, the questions that get created are stored inside the Quiz's default category, located inside the category of the course.
This relationship is partially illustrated here, showing an "English" course containing two Quiz activities, "Quiz 1" and "Quiz 2":

(This diagram also shows the use of higher-level categories which an Administrator may create in order to associate courses into their parent programs or departments, e.g. "Languages", "Humanities", etc.)
