KB1221 - Known Issue: Kaltura Blocking Moodle Guest from Video Resources

Summary

Users who login to Moodle as "Guest" will not be allowed to view Kaltura videos posted using the Kaltura Video Resource. Essentially, Kaltura will not recognize the Moodle "Guest" user as an allowed user type.

Body

Users who login to Moodle as "Guest" will not be allowed to view Kaltura videos posted using the Kaltura Video Resource. Moodle will allow the Guest user to open the Video Resource, but instead of showing the video in a player, Kaltura will display an "access denied" error message. Essentially, Kaltura will not recognize the Moodle "Guest" user as an allowed user type.

Work-arounds:

Option 1 - If Zoom, use a link to Zoom's Cloud:

If your recording was originally recorded to Zoom's Cloud, you could give your Guests the link to the original Zoom Cloud recording.
If you recorded the session to Zoom's cloud less than 6 months ago, it will still be there. (Zoom will also email a warning to you before your older-than-six-months cloud records get deleted.)

Zoom would have emailed you a link to the original cloud recording right after you ended the meeting. You could post that link into your course, underneath or near the Video Resource, with a warning like "If you cannot view this video, please use this link to the Zoom Cloud version".

Option 2: In Kaltura, share the video as "Unlisted"

You can share a link to your Kaltura video out to Moodle Guests by email, by setting your Kaltura recording to be "unlisted" (like what you'd do if it were on YouTube).

To set your Kaltura recording tro be Unlisted, take these steps:

  • Log into VCC Mediaspace at http://mediaspace.vcc.ca (using your regular MyVCC username and password). Your My Media area with all your videos is available there too.
  • In your "My Media" area, click the video, then select "Actions >> Publish" and set its status to Unlisted, and click Save.
  • Now, click the Share tab and use the "Link to Media Page" link or the "Email" option to send a link out to your Guest, outside of Moodle. This will allow your Moodle Guest to view the video at Mediaspace.
